What is Queermunity?
A New Kind of Venue
Queermunity is a vibrant event venue, gathering space, and café in Minneapolis, dedicated to offering high-quality experiences for LGBTQ+ and BIPOC communities and their allies. We work with and for the people we serve to build a regenerative economy—maintaining a truly affordable space to gather, celebrate, work, and create, while supporting local farmers, artists, makers, and small businesses.
A regenerative economy is about creating systems that restore, renew, and strengthen the communities around us. At Queermunity, this means we actively reinvest in local talent, organizations, and resources—amplifying what’s already working and building partnerships that foster growth, innovation, and lasting connections. Our approach focuses on supporting what’s here today, so we can live to see something better tomorrow.
Queermunity is open to the public daily from 8 AM to 8 PM, and general entry is free. Our space thrives thanks to café patronage, space rentals, ticketed events, and memberships. A portion of these sales is reinvested into queer-affirming resources and free community offerings like GayAA, book clubs, résumé support, discussion groups, and arts & cultural programming.

Queermunity was founded in 2022 by Hilary Otey and Kayla Barth with a shared vision to create an inclusive, community-driven space for LGBTQ+ and BIPOC individuals. In 2023, with support from the FINNOVATION Institute, they developed a comprehensive business plan to bring this vision to life.
Embracing their identity as a queer and Black-owned business, Hilary and Kayla prioritize flexibility, allowing them to operate as a social enterprise outside the constraints of nonprofit models. Revenue from the café, space rentals, ticketed events, and memberships is reinvested to provide free weekly and monthly programming, such as GayAA, book clubs, Resumé support, discussion groups, arts and more.
Guided by an entrepreneurial leadership staff and a diverse advisory committee, both comprised of experts in the fields of creative arts, marketing, community organizing, activism, and care work, Queermunity is a space that fosters connection, collaboration, and growth for all who engage with it.
