Why Minnesota's LGBTQ+ Community Needs Queermunity

We are isolated.

The LGBTQ+ community in Minnesota has been grappling with a sense of disconnection, despite the recent declaration of Minnesota as a safe haven for LGBTQ+ individuals. Nationally, LGBTQ+ people are under attack, leading to increased feelings of loneliness and isolation

We connect off and on.

Communities need to gather beyond moments of grief, such as rallies, vigils, or pride events. We believe it is crucial to come together regularly and foster a stronger sense of community.

We need more places for joy.

So, we decided to create a space where everyone can come together for joy – whether it's playing games with new friends, having tea with old buddies, learning a new skill, or listening to new local music.

We are creating a space to connect.

Like a box of chocolates, we’ll have a little something for everyone: corners with books, areas with community programming, and sections for robust conversations. Through rotating social, wellness, and cultural programming, we hope to offer accessible and diverse options for the community.

We will collaborate.

We welcome all kinds of mutually-beneficial partnerships and are committed to community accountability and transparency. We hold listening sessions, partner with local organizations, and will continue to be transparent about our growth.

Our Story

Queermunity, established in 2022 by Hilary Otey and Kayla Barth, is a project coming to life. With the help of Finnovation Lab in 2023, Hilary and Kayla developed a business plan. Now, we're teaming up with local groups and community members to bring Queermunity to life. Currently, we're working on finding the perfect location!

We’re a Queer-owned small business. We prefer this model because it gives us the flexibility to operate outside of nonprofit limitations while also meeting the community’s needs. Our cafe proceeds and memberships will reduce the cost of providing free events and space to the community.

Our diverse advisory committee ensures our space and activities meet many needs. A fantastic team of creatives, organizers, activists, and care workers is turning the Queermunity dream into reality with passion and dedication.
